"I love the 60s, it was the Youthquake"
"For the first time youth went out to life, instead of waiting for life to come to them." - Dianna Vreeland
I can't seem to decide on whether my love for the 60's started after I watched Hairspray or Gidget (the 1965 TV series not the movie). As a matter of fact I love everything about the 60s, from the "I have a dream speech" by Martin Luther King, to Diana Vreeland being appointed editor-in-chief at Vogue.
I LOVE IT ALL!
It was all a just a revolution, there was the sexual, the social and political. Students in Mexico City demanding for their rights, African Americans in the United States fighting to be treated equally. No one was afraid of speaking up and defending what they believed in.
It's all the self empowerment and the fact that everyone started embracing who they were and loving themselves that mainly attracts me to 60s.
I love the influence of the music, the films, the art, the social movements, but most importantly the photography and models. All those models were absolutely beautiful: Patti Boyd, Donyale Luna, Twigy, Verushka and of course Brigitte Bardot. It wasn't all just about their faces that made them beautiful but it was this whole new wave of style. It was from the make up, the hairdos to the wardrobe that helped create this atmosphere and movement around them that was always captured by amazing photographers like Melvin Sokolsky, Norman Parkinson and Richard Avedon.
For the past two weeks I've been thinking of starting a new photography project in which I will portray teenagers and young adults during the 60s. This whole rebellious look, mini skirts, messy hairdos, and bold make up. Nothing like the photographs used in high fashion magazines but photographs portraying a life style yet still capturing the essence of the 60s . I'm mostly excited about starting this new project and working with a whole new creative team and using new models which will have a completely different look compared to the models I've used in previous photo shoots.
