Back To The Future

With everything that's been going on lately in American from Trump becoming our President to what happened a couple of nights ago in Charlottesville I can't help but not say anything.

I can't believe that we're in the year 2017 and yet we still have to deal with people with such small minds such as our President and all the White Supremacists out there. Our country has come such a long way in the last 60 years and now it just feels like we're going back in time. It feels like we're back to living in the 1960s when the country was divided by race.

How is it that all these White Supremacists are allowed to come together and only spread hatred and yet not face any sort of legal repercussions. We have had so many people of color who have peacefully come together to spread awareness and try and a make a difference and yet they're the ones who face jail time and are fined.

Another thing that seems to be on my mind for the past couple of years is the fact that people think they can start hashtag movements or make hashtags go viral  and expect to make a difference. Don't they realize that hashtags won't save the world? When will people understand that in order to change America they need to get up and do something! Go out and speak your mind in public, start protests, come together and fight to be heard! Don't just send out tweets or Instagram posts and expect to make a difference!

Think of the courage and hard work it took for people of color to plan protest and sit ins back in the 1960's. Think of the courage it took for people of the LGBTQ community to go out and protest against the way they were being treated. Think of the amount of courage it took back in the late 1950's for young students of color to go to a school in which they were not wanted for simply having a dark skin tone.

People in the 60's didn't risk their lives for our civil rights only to have our generation rely on hashtags to change America.

Some of you might say that social media can be helpful when it comes to bringing awareness to certain topics, and I agree. We should be using social media to bring awareness but let's also use social media to bring people together and protest against our President and against all the White Supremacy in America. I am grateful to have such platforms that help reach out to so many people because they are useful when it comes to bringing everyone together. Let's use social media platforms to our advantage and let's do something other than start hashtags. Let's actually make a difference and go back to future, let's go back to 2017!
