Name / Age / Occupation

Lucas David I’m 24 and I’m a visual artist

I know that you are originally from Mexico but what made you want to move to L.A ?

I came here for collaborations that I had planned here. I was really interested in having an art show and I’ve recently had two.

What are some of your influences? What influences your art?

I don’t really have many influences or favorite artists besides photographers or musicians

What helped you develop your style? I feel like people can immediately recognize your drawings, you know what I mean?

I think I developed my style at a very young age, I think I was like 13 or 14. So i guess I’ve been making the same stuff and it's been so repetitive that it’s just become my style.

What do you do to overcome artist’s block or when you simply don’t feel inspired to draw? Because I go through that a lot but instead of doing anything I just sort of get this type of sadness from not being able to make any type of art

When I don’t feel like doing anything I just don’t do anything, I don't take my job very seriously because I don't wanna get bored. I had a creativity block the whole year in 2017 and the whole year i spent it complaining about boys so it was pretty much a waste of time because i needed a break from art, I guess? but this year it's different i feel more focused.

That's so funny because that's exactly what I went through this past year, I had really bad anxiety all year and crying over the dame stupid boy. It just threw my creativity out of the window.

So you also do photography?

Yes, I do.

How was it being an artist in Mexico, because I read in an interview that you said there was an incident where a teacher said your art wasn’t really “acceptable”

Yeah, I tried to get into two different schools in Mexico but I was rejected from both of them because they thought I didn’t have a real perception of art. But I am glad at the end of the day I started doing my own thing and learned how to do everything myself, I saved all my money and moved to LA.

Since music is one of your biggest inspirations what do you mostly listen to when you're drawing? What are some of your favorite bands and musicians to listen to?

When I’m making art I listen to Sonic Youth, When I'm not making art I listen to The Pretty Reckless

I know you’ve done collaborations with Taylor Momsen, have you also done collaborations with some of your other muses or artist that inspire you?

I did photos for my friend Alice Glass for her first EP and merch, I also went on tour with her when she was opening for Marilyn Manson. Two years ago I did merch for Sky Ferreira. Working for my pal Linda Ramone was a lot of fun too. I did a painting for Courtney Love some time ago, her daughter Frances actually was the one who requested a portrait of her and Courtney both at their 20s. I call it a collaboration because it was Frances' idea. And i'm sure there was lot more collaborations but I am way too high to remember.

Wow, that’s amazing! It’s so cool to have your muses and the people who inspire your art to contact you  to do collaborations with you! Did you come to L.A already knowing people or did you start meeting people once you were already here?

I didn't know anybody ! I had no real friends.

So how long have you been here for?

2 years, but I am always back and forth. but I love Mexico.

Are there any cool projects we should keep an eye out?

Working on my new store at the moment! Items should be out there very soon.
